[00:00:00] Hello everyone and welcome to episode four of Developer Tea.
[00:00:06] My name is Jonathan Cottrell and today we’re going to be talking about learning.
[00:00:17] Today is the first time that we’re going to be talking about learning on Developer
[00:00:21] Tea.
[00:00:22] It probably won’t be the last time, but I decided to dedicate one of the early episodes
[00:00:28] to this topic because I think once again it’s incredibly important to developers to cultivate
[00:00:35] the skill of learning.
[00:00:37] You may not view learning as a skill, but learning is an integral part of what you
[00:00:44] do as a developer every single day.
[00:00:47] The reason it’s so important is because what we do every day changes so often and
[00:00:54] we have to be able to learn the new techniques, we have to be able to learn new ways of doing
[00:01:01] things because everything about what we do changes so much.
[00:01:07] I’ll give you an easy example to show you how different being a developer is from some
[00:01:12] other jobs.
[00:01:14] If you are a blacksmith, the training you receive on day one is going to be pretty
[00:01:21] much applicable throughout your entire career.
[00:01:26] If you are a web developer, the training that you receive on day one probably won’t
[00:01:32] be applicable in even two or three years from now.
[00:01:36] Obviously there are some exceptions to this rule like for instance learning how computers
[00:01:41] work and learning the history of computers and how to keep your code dry and some
[00:01:46] of the fundamental elements of being a computer engineer, but there are a lot of things that
[00:01:53] do change in our industry.
[00:01:55] There’s a lot of things that we do now for instance in web development that 10 years
[00:02:00] ago wasn’t even possible.
[00:02:04] This is a result of the fact that technology moves incredibly fast.
[00:02:10] In fact it moves at an exponential rate.
[00:02:14] How do we cultivate the skill of learning?
[00:02:17] In other words, how do we learn how to learn?
[00:02:22] This is really the question that people are asking when they come up to me and
[00:02:25] they say, how do you learn how to be a web developer?
[00:02:30] The first part of that question is how do you learn?
[00:02:33] Today I’d like to talk about a technique for you to begin down the road of becoming
[00:02:40] a better learner.
[00:02:44] The technique is relatively simple.
[00:02:46] It basically employs the scientific method to changing behavior in yourself.
[00:02:54] You set yourself up by creating something to shoot for, a goal, a way of saying yes
[00:03:01] at this point once I’m able to do this particular thing then I can say that I’ve
[00:03:06] learned this subject.
[00:03:08] If you’re learning for instance how to write a Rails application then you might
[00:03:13] would set out to create a particular Rails application that acts as your proposition,
[00:03:22] your final end point.
[00:03:26] The next part of this is to actually go about learning.
[00:03:30] Choose a method of learning whether that’s reading or maybe it’s watching someone else
[00:03:35] do something in person or maybe it’s just simply sitting down at a computer and googling
[00:03:42] and then going back and writing code.
[00:03:45] Do something to learn and measure the effect of whatever that particular process is.
[00:03:54] It might be that you measure how much of your application gets built based on a
[00:03:59] particular learning experience that you have.
[00:04:03] It may be that you find some sort of objective test to measure yourself by.
[00:04:09] Whatever it is, find a way to measure your learning experience and then compare and
[00:04:16] move back to step one, start over and use a different learning method.
[00:04:22] What you’ll find is you’re going to develop a particular affinity to a learning
[00:04:29] style or another.
[00:04:30] It may be that you learn best by first reading something and then turning around and
[00:04:36] trying to implement something that you read.
[00:04:40] Or it may be that you learn best by trying to implement it and then reading about it
[00:04:44] and then trying to re-implement it.
[00:04:47] There are so many different ways to learn and you need to take the time to explore
[00:04:54] the different ways of learning.
[00:04:57] Now you’re not on your own.
[00:04:59] There has been quite a bit of research in this area as well.
[00:05:04] One thing that I can tell you about this, and you should take some time to Google
[00:05:10] some of the research, but one thing that’s for certain in a lot of this research is
[00:05:16] that people learn most effectively when they are actually active.
[00:05:22] When they actually do something with the material that they are learning while they
[00:05:26] are learning it in some way.
[00:05:29] Whether that’s, like I was saying before, reading and then turning around and doing
[00:05:33] or trying to do something and reading about it after you fail at that first attempt.
[00:05:41] Be active while you are learning.
[00:05:43] Don’t just sit back and learn by osmosis.
[00:05:48] Remember that you’re a human being and learning is not a science.
[00:05:53] There are some scientific things around learning that will help you become a better
[00:05:58] learner, but ultimately you are a human being.
[00:06:03] Different methods of learning and different ways of measuring your learning, not all
[00:06:07] of them are going to be absolutely accurate.
[00:06:10] It may be that something that you learned three different methods ago is finally becoming
[00:06:17] clear in your most recent method and that’s skewing your results.
[00:06:23] So ultimately you trying to measure yourself, it’s kind of an inexact science.
[00:06:29] So for that reason, when you are measuring yourself, don’t take for granted the value
[00:06:36] of subjective measurements.
[00:06:38] In other words, take notes in how you feel about a particular method.
[00:06:43] If you are really enjoying watching someone do something in person versus watching somebody
[00:06:50] do something on a screencast, that’s a valuable thing for you to know about yourself because
[00:06:56] if you’re enjoying learning, then you’re most likely to continue learning.
[00:07:01] If you are just dredging through something and it’s just awful and you hate doing
[00:07:07] it but you know that it’s supposed to be the most effective method for you to
[00:07:11] learn, well, you’re probably going to quit.
[00:07:13] You’re probably going to get tired of doing something that you just honestly hate doing
[00:07:18] Regardless of how effective it may be, it will drop to zero effectiveness if you can’t
[00:07:24] sustain it.
[00:07:27] This goes back to what we were talking about in episode two.
[00:07:30] You have to wrap your learning habits around your ability to focus and if you can’t focus
[00:07:37] on something, then regardless of how effective that method is supposed to be, it’s going
[00:07:42] to be completely useless to you if you are unable to focus because it’s just miserable
[00:07:48] to you.
[00:07:51] So just to recap what we’ve talked about today.
[00:07:54] Learning is incredibly important, especially to people who are working with computers,
[00:08:01] people who are working in the development community.
[00:08:05] Because learning is so important, we should take it upon ourselves to become better
[00:08:11] learners.
[00:08:12] There’s a myriad of ways to become a better learner.
[00:08:15] One way that I propose is to employ a sort of scientific method.
[00:08:20] Set a goal, build, measure, and repeat.
[00:08:24] If you can learn to do these things and continue to do them, you’re going to become
[00:08:28] a constantly self-bettering developer.
[00:08:31] You’re going to be able to learn about how you learn and learn to employ those
[00:08:36] new methods of learning constantly.
[00:08:40] Finally, don’t forget that you’re a human being, not a machine.
[00:08:45] It doesn’t matter how much measuring you do, sometimes scientific methods will fail
[00:08:52] on you because subjective things really do matter.
[00:08:56] So if you are not enjoying a particular method of learning, even though it might
[00:09:00] be scientifically the most effective method of learning, it’s going to affect you
[00:09:05] negatively when you try to do that thing over and over because you’re not
[00:09:10] going to be able to focus if you’re not enjoying yourself.
[00:09:15] That’s all we have time for today.
