[00:00:00] Hey everyone and welcome to Developer Tea.
[00:00:04] My name is Jonathan Cottrell and today I am answering a question from a listener named
[00:00:08] Matthew about how to separate his social media identities or if he even should separate his
[00:00:15] social media identities between his professional life and his personal life.
[00:00:24] This is a question that I think needs to come up a bit more often and that is how do we
[00:00:29] integrate our personal lives with our professional lives?
[00:00:33] It’s difficult because our social media is a representation of what we think and feel
[00:00:39] regardless of what time of the day it is or regardless of what we are doing.
[00:00:43] Whether I am actually coding on a project or if I’m just hanging out with my friends
[00:00:48] I still have the same social media account and that’s kind of strange.
[00:00:52] It’s a little bit odd and the reason it’s odd is because there used to be a much clearer
[00:00:57] separation between our working time and our non-working time and now that has been kind
[00:01:04] of thrown away.
[00:01:05] A lot of our non-working time it feeds into the personality that we use in our working
[00:01:11] time.
[00:01:12] Now I don’t think there’s anything particularly wrong with this.
[00:01:14] In fact I think this is a good shift for our culture and there’s a larger question at
[00:01:19] hand here about whether or not we should be performing on social media, whether or not
[00:01:25] we should be changing the way that we look to different people based on who is looking
[00:01:30] at us.
[00:01:31] We do this naturally.
[00:01:33] We dress up differently when we go to different places for example.
[00:01:37] We dress differently to go to the park than we do to go to work.
[00:01:41] But we also do this with people.
[00:01:43] We act differently around our family than we might act around people that we don’t know.
[00:01:48] So here’s Matthew’s actual question.
[00:01:50] He says, how do you separate your social media identities?
[00:01:54] I love my geeky hobbies like comic books and video games, but I also want to show my
[00:01:59] professional side.
[00:02:00] How should I separate the two or should I even separate them at all?
[00:02:04] Matthew, I’m going to give you a very difficult answer to a very difficult question.
[00:02:10] The answer is it depends.
[00:02:12] It depends on a hundred different things.
[00:02:15] First of all, it depends on who your potential employer or client is, what they care about.
[00:02:22] It also depends on what you typically post.
[00:02:25] For example, you said you are posting about your comic books and video games.
[00:02:30] So there’s a lot of complexity here about how a video game might negatively affect your
[00:02:37] professional life.
[00:02:38] And this is a new problem that we have to solve.
[00:02:42] About 10 or 15 years ago, your interest in video games may never be known by your employer.
[00:02:48] But now that we are sharing our lives online more than ever through things like Twitter
[00:02:52] or LinkedIn, even this is a new problem to solve.
[00:02:56] So before I get into more specific answers, I can say that one solution to this would
[00:03:02] be to not participate in social media at all.
[00:03:05] Of course, that could also be detrimental to your job search.
[00:03:09] It could be a very positive thing for you to participate in social media, depending
[00:03:13] on who your client or your employer is.
[00:03:17] In fact, last week, we talked about the importance of being active on your social media if you
[00:03:23] have it.
[00:03:24] So you shouldn’t have a social media account unless you’re actually going to do something
[00:03:28] with it.
[00:03:29] It’d be better for you to delete it than if you were to not do anything with it at all
[00:03:33] to let it remain dormant.
[00:03:35] I also discussed the idea that it could be a negative signal if you are making your social
[00:03:41] media account private, because you must have a reason for making it private, otherwise
[00:03:46] you wouldn’t do so.
[00:03:47] Now, of course, your reasoning may be that you just don’t like sharing all the information
[00:03:51] about your life with people that you don’t know.
[00:03:54] But just because something is rational to you or just because you think it makes sense
[00:03:58] does not necessarily mean that somebody else will agree with you or that they’ll receive
[00:04:03] the signal as you intended to send it.
[00:04:06] So this discussion isn’t about whether or not it is right for you to share who you are
[00:04:11] on social media or whether or not it is okay for you to have a private life.
[00:04:16] That is a totally different discussion.
[00:04:18] What we’re talking about here is what makes you hireable and what makes people decide
[00:04:23] that you are a good fit to work with.
[00:04:26] So what we’re going to try to do is manage the assumptions of other people.
[00:04:30] And that perhaps is one of the hardest parts of the communication process, managing what
[00:04:35] other people will assume based on what you have said or based on what you have done.
[00:04:41] So for example, if you lock your social media account, then somebody may assume that you
[00:04:46] are locking it because you have things behind that that are illegal, for example.
[00:04:52] And once again, regardless of the rationality of that argument, that may still be an assumption
[00:04:57] that affects you in the future.
[00:04:59] So we’re trying to manage assumptions.

[00:06:46] Now of course this question has a lot of complexity behind it and a lot of answers and not any
[00:06:52] of them is specifically right or wrong.
[00:06:54] All we can do is try to manage the assumptions of other people when we are communicating.
[00:06:59] And my assumption now is that you, Matthew, and other people who are listening to this
[00:07:04] who are considering separating their social media accounts, you’re trying to be hired.
[00:07:08] You’re trying to become hireable and you’re trying to manage your social media in such
[00:07:13] a way that it supports your professional life but also allows you to express your personal
[00:07:19] life.
[00:07:20] So I’m going to give you two things to remember and to think about as you are making this
[00:07:24] decision.
[00:07:25] Number one, never confuse professionalism with boring or robotic.
[00:07:31] Appearing professional doesn’t necessarily mean only discussing programming or development
[00:07:37] on your social media accounts.
[00:07:40] People know that you are a human.
[00:07:42] Separating yourself from your brand isn’t always necessary.
[00:07:45] Many employers will appreciate the human qualities of your personality.
[00:07:49] But most employers aren’t hiring you simply for your skill set, they’re also hiring you
[00:07:53] for who you are as a human being and how that relates to the work they are doing.
[00:07:59] So if you never show your human side, how does an employer differentiate you from someone
[00:08:04] else with the same exact skill set?
[00:08:07] Showing your human side helps them decide whether or not you are a fit from a value
[00:08:12] perspective as well as from a worldview perspective.
[00:08:17] Now this part is just my opinion but I would imagine that you will be much happier working
[00:08:22] with people who appreciate and agree with your human side rather than only working with
[00:08:28] people who are totally agnostic or don’t understand who you are as a human or those who don’t
[00:08:34] care who you are as a human.
[00:08:36] If somebody does in fact view you as a robotic, just getting the job done, just coding, if
[00:08:43] that is how they view you then my guess is you probably don’t want to work for them.
[00:08:48] There are plenty of people in the world who would appreciate the fact that you like video
[00:08:51] games or comic books.
[00:08:53] There are plenty of people in the world who do understand that you have a human side.
[00:08:58] Now why is that?
[00:08:59] Well because they themselves are also human.
[00:09:01] They very likely have their own interests and you might even run into someone who has
[00:09:07] the same interests as you and in that way your interests in video games or comic books
[00:09:13] give you a deeper connection with the people you are working with even if it has absolutely
[00:09:18] nothing to do with what you are working on.
[00:09:22] So once again never confuse professionalism with boring or robotic.
[00:09:27] You are a human.
[00:09:28] You have interests that go beyond just development.
[00:09:32] Expressing those interests is a part of your humanity and you should never divorce yourself
[00:09:37] from your humanity.
[00:09:39] That goes on Twitter as well as in person.
[00:09:42] The second thing to remember is that employers and clients are always balancing risks and
[00:09:48] benefits.
[00:09:49] This is the reason that we have something called a pros versus cons list.
[00:09:54] Your social media profile is one of the avenues that an employer or client will use to determine
[00:10:01] the risks and benefits associated with working with you.
[00:10:05] Those risks and benefits go far beyond whether or not you are proficient as a developer.
[00:10:10] Those risks and benefits go into the relational aspects of who you are and who you know for
[00:10:16] example.
[00:10:17] So using your social media profile I can determine the types of people that you associate with.
[00:10:25] Your personal so-called geeky hobbies might pose both risks and benefits to a potential
[00:10:31] employer or client.
[00:10:32] For example the client might also be interested in comic books or video games as I said previously.
[00:10:38] But what would a risk look like?
[00:10:40] Well if you’re obsessed with video games then I might be afraid that you are more worried
[00:10:45] about your gaming than the project you are working on for me.
[00:10:49] This is especially true if I myself am not interested in gaming because all I know about
[00:10:54] gaming is the cultural perception and picture of the average gamer.
[00:11:00] Now Matthew your interest in games and comic books may not be offensive but somebody else
[00:11:07] listening to this might have an interest that is potentially offensive to their future employer
[00:11:13] or client and if that interest is offensive enough then your value sets or your world
[00:11:18] views may be different and you may not be effectively able to work on their behalf if
[00:11:24] you disagree with them or if you have views that are so different from them that it causes
[00:11:29] personal conflict.
[00:11:31] This is a risk.
[00:11:32] This is a risk that your potential employer or client is going to try to evaluate based
[00:11:38] on the information that they can gather about you and if they find that information on a
[00:11:42] social media profile if they see that you could be a risk to them or if they have a
[00:11:48] misunderstanding of something that you have an appreciation for that causes them to think
[00:11:54] that there is a risk then yes your social media profile could cause a potential issue
[00:12:00] with your professional life.
[00:12:02] So I’m going to give you some basic advice on how to deal with this and how to avoid
[00:12:07] your social media profile causing an issue with your professional life.
[00:12:11] First of all when in doubt balance your social media account to accurately represent your
[00:12:16] interests.
[00:12:18] So you shouldn’t avoid your own interests and you also shouldn’t avoid expressing your
[00:12:23] interests on your social media account with some caveats of course.
[00:12:28] You should be avoiding controversy online as controversy is often divisive and may pose
[00:12:34] a risk to your potential clients.
[00:12:36] Of course this is still my opinion if you have something that you feel very strongly
[00:12:41] about that you think you need to express your opinion about on social media then that is
[00:12:46] your decision.
[00:12:47] I’m explaining to you though how to control the assumptions of other people and typically
[00:12:52] that means being conservative being not politically conservative but rather being conservative
[00:12:58] with what you say online and not saying things that are potentially divisive.
[00:13:03] You should avoid offensive language in my opinion avoid resharing offensive content
[00:13:07] from others even if it’s taken wrong being offended can leave a lasting impression on
[00:13:13] a client that is very difficult to erase and in fact this kind of thing spreads if you
[00:13:18] offend one person that is the kind of story that they will tell to other people who could
[00:13:23] be your clients in the future as well.
[00:13:26] So the simple rule to follow if you had to take one thing away from this episode is if
[00:13:30] it is questionable about whether or not this is going to offend someone online don’t share
[00:13:35] it just simply don’t participate on your public social media profile.
[00:13:41] Consider rethinking why you feel the need to share on a public social media profile
[00:13:48] your opinions especially consider the risks and benefits for you.
[00:13:54] Before you send a tweet evaluate does this tweet help me or could it possibly hurt me
[00:14:01] does this tweet help someone else or could it possibly hurt someone else.
[00:14:07] Consider before you tweet or before you share something on Facebook am I sharing this because
[00:14:12] I’m angry what is the motivation behind whatever it is that I’m saying.

[00:14:28] So choose your words wisely be smart about what you’re saying be careful about what you’re
[00:14:33] saying when you are speaking in a public realm remember that other people are constantly
[00:14:38] considering what you’re saying and the things behind what you’re saying the unspoken assumptions
[00:14:44] that they make have a powerful impact on your life.
