[00:00:09] the habits of good students, three things you can start doing today to become a better
[00:00:15] learner.

[00:00:19] This has become a theme of the show over the course of the last year and a half, and we
[00:00:24] can talk about it three times a week, and it still doesn’t get old.
[00:00:27] We’re talking about learning today.

[00:01:17] very long, you think that learning is something that you do primarily in school or perhaps
[00:01:22] something you do as a child, or maybe you’re learning the language, and then once you get
[00:01:29] a job, you’re going to be able to do it.
[00:01:29] You’re going to be able to do it.

[00:01:30] If you’re not using the language, then you’re no longer learning, but that couldn’t be further
[00:01:33] from the truth.
[00:01:34] The most powerful thing you can do with your life each and every day is focus on learning.
[00:01:42] Becoming a great learner in the tech industry isn’t just a fad or a catchphrase.
[00:01:48] It is what makes you relevant and hireable in this industry.
[00:01:53] It’s what gets you hired.
[00:01:55] It can also be what gets you fired if you ignore it long enough.
[00:01:59] If you get passed up by knowledge that you should be gaining along the way because you
[00:02:04] decided that you’re going to stop learning, then you may lose your job.
[00:02:09] I’m not trying to scare you off.
[00:02:10] I’m trying to inspire you to adopt learning as an everyday habit.
[00:02:15] You know, I don’t have to harp on this long because the signs of this are everywhere.
[00:02:19] If you aren’t learning, you will lose your footing in software development because the
[00:02:23] whole industry will change faster and faster every day.
[00:02:27] So I want to share with you some of the habits that you need to have in order to be a great
[00:02:29] of great learners.
[00:02:30] The leaders of any industry have these habits under their belt.
[00:02:35] There’s a lot to learn from these, and this is only one piece of the puzzle, but these
[00:02:40] are three things you can start doing today.
[00:02:42] You can actually go and practically implement today to change the way your brain works when
[00:02:48] you are at your job, when you’re actually working.
[00:02:52] And this is about integrating learning into your working process.
[00:02:55] So let’s jump straight into this first.
[00:02:59] First tip here, the first habit of a great learner, great learners take notes.
[00:03:06] Great learners take notes.
[00:03:10] Now, when you’re taking notes, what does it mean to take notes?
[00:03:14] Well, I like to take notes handwritten on a on like a legal pad.
[00:03:20] OK, and I like for this legal pad basically to be trash paper to be easily discarded if
[00:03:27] I wanted to.
[00:03:28] I don’t.
[00:03:29] I don’t like to pay a lot for my notebooks.
[00:03:31] I like to use something that’s cheap.
[00:03:33] And the reason I like to use something that’s cheap is because I don’t want to be afraid
[00:03:36] to write on it.
[00:03:37] I don’t want to be afraid to rip it out and throw it away and start back over.
[00:03:41] There’s another important facet of a of a paper notebook, and that is that it’s not
[00:03:46] digital.
[00:03:47] Now, this is not something that you necessarily have to adopt.
[00:03:50] I want for you to decide how you take notes best.
[00:03:53] But I like taking notes on physical paper by writing because I can easily.
[00:03:58] There’s quite a bit of science to suggest that we remember things better when we spatially
[00:04:06] organize them.
[00:04:07] In other words, if I create my notes on the page and I put different parts of the notes
[00:04:15] on one part of the page, and then I put different parts of the notes on another part of the
[00:04:19] page, and perhaps I draw some kind of little doodle next to the notes, whatever it is,
[00:04:25] doesn’t matter what it is, I’m going to learn and retain.
[00:04:28] That information better than if it was all presented to me in a linear fashion.
[00:04:35] And the reason for this is simple.
[00:04:37] Our brains remember spatial things much better than we remember linear things.
[00:04:43] So if you think about your childhood home, we’ve talked about this on the show in the
[00:04:47] past.
[00:04:48] If you think about your childhood home, you can probably remember where your room was.
[00:04:53] In fact, you can probably remember where a hundred or two hundred or three hundred different
[00:04:58] items.
[00:04:58] In your house, where they were.
[00:05:01] But if you tried to recite a hundred or two hundred or three hundred names of, let’s say,
[00:05:06] kids that you went to elementary school with, well, that’s going to be a little bit harder,
[00:05:11] right?
[00:05:11] Because that information isn’t presented spatially to you.
[00:05:15] It’s presented in a different way.
[00:05:17] And this technique is used over and over by people who compete in memory championships.
[00:05:23] So that’s one of the reasons we got a little bit off topic there.
[00:05:27] That’s one of the reasons why.
[00:05:28] I like to use paper and pen to take my notes is because I like to organize things in non
[00:05:35] linear fashions.
[00:05:36] I also like to be able to draw charts.
[00:05:39] I like to be able to draw diagrams.
[00:05:41] I like to be able to connect things with lines that I otherwise it’d be a little bit difficult,
[00:05:46] a little bit clunky to do that on my computer.
[00:05:50] Now, if you have a tablet, you can do something similar on a tablet.
[00:05:53] I also like to remove the context away from the screen.
[00:05:58] Which is mostly just a preference, but I find that it helps me a little bit more if
[00:06:04] I’m actually active in this process, right?
[00:06:08] In other words, if my hand is moving, I’m activating a different process than if I’m
[00:06:13] typing.
[00:06:14] I’m activating a little bit of a different process than if I’m using a mouse.
[00:06:18] So it changes the way that I’m interacting with the information, even if it’s just that
[00:06:22] small amount.
[00:06:24] And again, you can use a tablet.
[00:06:26] You can draw on a tablet.
[00:06:28] You can use whatever note-taking app it is that you use on your tablet and have some
[00:06:33] similar outcomes with that.
[00:06:36] But whether it’s placebo or some other reason, I’ve found that when I take notes on paper,
[00:06:41] they tend to be more effective than when I take notes with some other kind of digital
[00:06:47] format.
[00:06:47] So that’s habit number one of great learners.
[00:06:50] Take notes.
[00:06:51] Take notes.
[00:06:52] It’s impossible to remember everything that you’re hearing.
[00:06:55] It’s impossible to digest the things.
[00:06:58] It’s impossible to digest the things that you are learning without actually getting
[00:07:00] them out of your brain in some way.
[00:07:03] Taking notes forces you to reformulate the information that you’re taking into your brain
[00:07:09] and it brings it back out so that later on in the future, you can look at what you learned.
[00:07:15] It’s like a historical picture of the learning process at work.
[00:07:21] That’s what notes do for you.
[00:07:23] So start taking notes.
[00:07:25] I can almost guarantee you that.
[00:07:28] You will see an immediate difference in the way that you think if you start taking notes.

[00:09:58] That’s how all this fits together.
[00:10:00] And we said, number one, the first habit that I wanted to share with you today,
[00:10:04] great learners take notes.
[00:10:07] Number two, great learners dissect systems.
[00:10:11] Great learners dissect systems.
[00:10:15] I’ll give you an example.
[00:10:16] The other day, I was working with a coworker, and we were working with some legacy code.
[00:10:22] And somebody had put in their PHP, they put the string,
[00:10:28] with the word true in it.
[00:10:30] And some of you might see where this is going.
[00:10:32] I looked around, and I found a string with the word false in it.
[00:10:37] And we all know that true and false are Boolean values.
[00:10:42] In pretty much every language, you can write true, or you can write false.
[00:10:46] This isn’t across the board, but most languages, you can write those without any quotations.
[00:10:51] They aren’t a string, they’re just a fundamental type.
[00:10:54] So I saw that this was kind of a weird thing to see in the code.
[00:10:57] It was,
[00:10:58] a string that said true, and a string that said false.
[00:11:03] Now, before we go any further, let me just say, that is a bad idea.
[00:11:06] Don’t write the string false, especially the string false.
[00:11:11] But don’t write the string true either,
[00:11:13] and expect that those values are going to be reliable versions of Boolean values.
[00:11:19] But I wanted to check to see what PHP would do when I casted false,
[00:11:25] the string false,
[00:11:27] to a Boolean,
[00:11:28] to a Boolean value.
[00:11:29] So I opened the interactive shell, and I casted the string false to a Boolean value,
[00:11:34] and of course, it returned true.
[00:11:37] Some languages, that would not necessarily occur.
[00:11:41] Some languages, that value would return false.
[00:11:43] If you cast the string false to a Boolean value,
[00:11:47] it would evaluate that and say,
[00:11:49] oh, well, I know what you meant.
[00:11:51] I know that you meant false.
[00:11:54] Once again, this is a bad idea.
[00:11:55] Do not use the string,
[00:11:58] true or false.
[00:11:59] But in any case, I didn’t stop there, right?
[00:12:03] And this is where dissecting the system comes into play.
[00:12:06] Because if you’re just looking to solve a problem,
[00:12:10] if you’re only looking to figure something small out,
[00:12:14] then you would stop at learning that PHP casts the string false to a true Boolean.
[00:12:22] But if you wanted to learn about the way that PHP casts
[00:12:27] different values,
[00:12:29] then you keep on going, right?
[00:12:31] So I checked maybe five or ten others.
[00:12:33] Like an empty string, for example.
[00:12:35] I checked an empty string.
[00:12:36] I checked a string with a space in it.
[00:12:39] I checked the number zero.
[00:12:41] I checked, you know, obviously the bare words true and false.
[00:12:46] I checked the null identifier.
[00:12:48] I checked all these different things in PHP to see what it would cast them to.
[00:12:53] Now, if you are working on a project,
[00:12:56] and you come across something that you don’t fully understand,
[00:12:59] the great student sees this as an opportunity.
[00:13:04] Your obstacles in your work life are always learning opportunities.
[00:13:11] If you’re taking notes, as I told you to do in the first point,
[00:13:15] if you’re taking notes now, write that down.
[00:13:18] Every obstacle you face, anytime you don’t understand something,
[00:13:23] that’s an obstacle.
[00:13:24] Any of those obstacles that you face,
[00:13:26] those are learning opportunities.
[00:13:29] And when you have a learning opportunity,
[00:13:31] you can either learn the minimum amount,
[00:13:35] or you can learn as much as possible in that learning opportunity.
[00:13:40] And learning as much as possible means dissecting the system that you’re learning about.
[00:13:46] Now, there’s a realistic amount of dissecting that will occur,
[00:13:49] and then there’s an unrealistic amount.
[00:13:52] I didn’t check every letter in the alphabet to see what would happen,
[00:13:56] if I casted those letters to a Boolean value in PHP.
[00:13:59] I learned a lot with just a little bit more effort.
[00:14:05] Hopefully by now, all of you have heard of the Pareto Principle,
[00:14:08] but the idea is that 80% of the benefit comes from 20% of the effort.
[00:14:13] And that’s the rule that I want you to use when you’re dissecting a system,
[00:14:17] when you’re digging in and learning a little bit deeper than just the surface level.
[00:14:23] When you have a bug in your software,
[00:14:25] when you have a bug in your software,
[00:14:25] which you will probably today.
[00:14:28] When you have a bug in your software, dig in a little bit deeper.
[00:14:32] And I want you to use that 20% effort to get the 80% benefit.
[00:14:36] I want you to focus on learning the most important parts of that system,
[00:14:42] dissecting the most important parts of that system.
[00:14:45] If you go crazy on this, if you dissect the whole thing,
[00:14:49] then yes, you will learn a lot.
[00:14:51] But eventually there are diminishing returns.
[00:14:53] There are edge cases that you start learning,
[00:14:55] and there are edge cases that you start learning about
[00:14:56] that aren’t really going to be super helpful in the long run.
[00:14:59] So this is an overgeneralized way of saying,
[00:15:02] don’t just solve your single problem.
[00:15:05] Learn about the system that your problem is working within.
[00:15:09] Don’t just solve that problem,
[00:15:11] but understand the system and why the problem occurred.
[00:15:15] Follow it back to its roots.
[00:15:17] So that’s the second habit that great learners always employ.
[00:15:22] That is, they dissect the system.
[00:15:24] They understand the underlying principles about why something occurs,
[00:15:30] not just that it does or does not occur given certain circumstances.
[00:15:35] So habit number one, take notes.
[00:15:37] Habit number two, dissect systems.
[00:15:40] And habit number three, great learners teach what they have learned.
[00:15:45] Great learners teach what they have learned.
[00:15:48] You do not have to have a developer working under your management
[00:15:53] to become a teacher.
[00:15:55] In fact, you don’t even have to teach other people to become a teacher.
[00:16:01] That sounds a little bit crazy, doesn’t it?
[00:16:03] You don’t have to teach anyone to teach someone.
[00:16:06] But the reality here is that it’s not about the receiving end in this process.
[00:16:12] It’s about your preparation and your understanding of material in order to teach it.
[00:16:19] If you think about it, what I do with Developer Tea is I talk into a mic.

[00:16:30] But if you think about the actual reality,
[00:16:32] I am in a room talking into a mic and no one can hear me.

[00:16:40] And this is the thing that I want you to capture.
[00:16:42] Again, if you’re taking notes, write this down.
[00:16:46] The work that I do to create these episodes is just as helpful to my learning
[00:16:53] as it is to the people who hear the episodes.
[00:16:58] The process of teaching is also the process of learning.
[00:17:05] Let me say that again.
[00:17:06] The process of formulating content or formulating something into coherent thoughts
[00:17:14] and words that you can communicate to another person in a way that they now have that knowledge,
[00:17:21] that learning process for them,
[00:17:23] is fundamentally connected to the teaching process for you.
[00:17:30] Think about it this way.
[00:17:32] For you to be ready to teach something, you have to have learned that thing thoroughly.
[00:17:39] And the process of teaching, and more specifically,
[00:17:42] the process of preparing to teach will outline where you are weak on a given subject,
[00:17:48] where your knowledge is weak on a given subject.
[00:17:51] And preparing to teach…
[00:17:53] That subject will require that you fix the areas where you’re weak.
[00:17:59] So you’ll see that the great learners in any field,
[00:18:03] they eventually end up teaching in some way or another.
[00:18:07] Whether that’s through some kind of media outlet,
[00:18:10] or maybe they write a book,
[00:18:11] or maybe they actually become a professor,
[00:18:14] they end up teaching.
[00:18:16] Now, for you to start teaching,
[00:18:18] you don’t have to have someone listening.
[00:18:20] Take the same rubber duck that you use for writing,
[00:18:23] rubber duck debugging,
[00:18:26] and start rubber duck teaching.
[00:18:29] Start teaching content to yourself.
[00:18:33] And the amazing thing is,
[00:18:35] this will increase your authority in your given field.
[00:18:39] Especially if you capture what you are learning and what you’re teaching.
[00:18:44] If you can teach other people through, let’s say, a blog,
[00:18:47] something as simple as that,
[00:18:49] that can be incredibly valuable.
[00:18:51] You don’t have to have thousands,
[00:18:53] or millions of readers for that to be valuable.
[00:18:57] That’s just as valuable to you as the writer as it is to the reader.
[00:19:02] So running back through the habits of a great learner,
[00:19:05] number one, great learners take notes.
[00:19:09] Number two, great learners dissect systems.
[00:19:12] And number three, great learners teach what they have learned.
