[00:00:00] Take a moment and think about a couple of habits that you’ve been able to establish.

[00:00:18] Often when we think about habits, many of us have frustration, maybe even a little bit

[00:00:23] of guilt that we’ve built up.

[00:00:25] But you probably have some habits that you would be proud to put on display.

[00:00:32] Think about those.

[00:00:33] Keep them in your mind.

[00:00:34] We’re talking about everything that surrounds the habit in today’s episode.

[00:00:38] My name is Jonathan Cantrell.

[00:00:51] Everything you do over and over, the things that you do on a regular basis are drastically

[00:01:00] more important than the things that you do on a one-off basis.

[00:01:04] The things that you invest in consistently are the things that are going to give you

[00:01:10] the most consistent returns.

[00:01:11] This is not novel information.

[00:01:15] You probably already know this.

[00:01:17] You probably already know it because you probably already want to build good habits

[00:01:21] and break bad ones.

[00:01:23] And this isn’t novel advice for this podcast.

[00:01:28] This is something that you’ve probably heard many times over elsewhere.

[00:01:34] But I want to give you a piece of food for thought about habits today.

[00:01:39] Very often we do think about habits as sole individual behaviors, things that we want

[00:01:47] to do.

[00:01:49] But the truth is, habits are much more than that.

[00:01:52] In fact, I want to shift your thinking.

[00:01:55] I want you to reframe habits.

[00:01:57] Think about habits as the resulting action.

[00:02:01] The resulting action, what does that mean?

[00:02:05] It means that yes, of course, they are a behavior, but they don’t stand alone.

[00:02:11] The vast majority of habits do not stand alone.

[00:02:15] They are not simply an atomic action that you take.

[00:02:20] That is a underselling of the importance of all of the things that surround the habit.

[00:02:28] Those of you who are sharp listeners, you might think that I’m trying to go against

[00:02:31] what James Clear says in Atomic Habits and I’m absolutely not.

[00:02:37] Instead, he supports this idea about habits, specifically the idea that your habits are

[00:02:45] the result.

[00:02:47] They are the result, not the thing that you need to change.

[00:02:52] They are not the thing that you need to change.

[00:02:54] You care the most about the result, but the things that you need to change typically surround

[00:02:59] the habit.

[00:03:00] Let’s talk about the ways that you can change in a way that will develop or help develop

[00:03:06] the habit.

[00:03:08] Once you have considered the habits that you have that you would like to put on display,

[00:03:13] think about those.

[00:03:14] Take one of them and think about all of the reasons why that habit is so strong.

[00:03:21] A simple habit that we have at my home is we make coffee every morning.

[00:03:27] There’s a lot that we’ve done to set ourselves up for success in making coffee.

[00:03:31] We always have good coffee beans.

[00:03:35] They’re always ready.

[00:03:37] We have good coffee gear.

[00:03:39] We have mugs to hold our coffee in.

[00:03:43] Now it does help, of course, that we get some kind of positive reward.

[00:03:48] Caffeine is, after all, a drug.

[00:03:51] But not everyone takes the time to make good coffee every day.

[00:03:56] They may get their caffeine from some other source.

[00:04:00] So the habit that we’ve built is set up well.

[00:04:04] That’s the first part.

[00:04:05] The front half of this discussion is how are you setting yourself up to make this habit

[00:04:11] possible?

[00:04:13] It may mean investing in the right kind of setup.

[00:04:18] It might mean preparing when you have the energy to prepare.

[00:04:23] A good example of this is making sure that you’ve chosen your workout clothes for tomorrow’s

[00:04:29] early morning workout and you’ve laid them out so that you have the least possible friction

[00:04:35] to the actual habit that you care about.

[00:04:38] Think about it like this.

[00:04:39] You’re not trying to build a habit of choosing what gym clothes to wear in the morning.

[00:04:44] So the lower friction you have, the more likely you are to follow through on the habit.

[00:04:50] Going back to the coffee example, we always pre-fill our kettle the night before and I

[00:04:54] spent the time figuring out how to get the kettle to turn itself on in the morning.

[00:04:59] All of this setup should be pointed at getting you to do the smallest possible version or

[00:05:04] the very first steps in the sequence of the habit that you’re trying to develop.

[00:05:09] This is kind of the thesis of atomic habits.

[00:05:12] You’re trying to get that first step.

[00:05:15] You’re trying to develop a workout habit, but the first habit is to get up and do any

[00:05:23] kind of exercise at all.

[00:05:26] This might be a good example of an atomic habit.

[00:05:28] So we’ll leave that part to all of the many resources that you’ve already found on building

[00:05:34] the habit itself.

[00:05:35] I want to talk to you about the backside, the second half of today’s discussion.

[00:05:41] You might hear a train in the background.

[00:05:44] It’s a rare occurrence around here, but the second half of this discussion is the reinforcement.

[00:05:51] The reinforcement, this is once you’ve actually done the habit, what kind of response or what

[00:06:00] kind of situational or environmental feedback are you going to get?

[00:06:07] If you get no environmental feedback, it’s harder to reinforce that behavior.

[00:06:11] This is why having some kind of accountability group or even if it’s just workout partners

[00:06:18] that you send a message to, let them know that you worked out today, and you get some

[00:06:23] kind of congratulatory feedback, this is some kind of reinforcement loop.

[00:06:30] The important thing is not necessarily that you have to have some social reinforcement,

[00:06:34] but instead to think about what happens after you’ve done the habit.

[00:06:38] How do you reinforce that you’ve just done something that you want to do again?

[00:06:43] So I want you to reframe your thinking, reframe your thinking about habits as the result of

[00:06:49] a good setup and the result of a positive feedback loop.

[00:06:55] The result of a good setup, the result of positive feedback loop.

[00:06:59] So there’s two things that you need to do.

[00:07:01] One, reduce the friction in your setup.

[00:07:06] Find a way to reduce the friction necessary, the effort necessary to complete that habit

[00:07:14] or to get that habit started.

[00:07:15] That friction at the very beginning, whatever those first few actions are, whatever you

[00:07:20] can do to reduce that friction, it’s going to help.

[00:07:24] And then on the back half, create a sustainable reinforcement loop.

[00:07:31] What does sustainable mean?

[00:07:32] Why did I call this out?

[00:07:34] It’s easy to say, well, every time I work out, I’m going to give myself a treat.

[00:07:39] I’m going to start eating a candy bar every time I work out.

[00:07:42] This is not a sustainable reinforcement loop.

[00:07:45] Eventually, you’re either going to adapt to that, so you’re going to start expecting

[00:07:50] the candy bar even if you don’t work out, or the reward itself is going to have detrimental

[00:07:55] effects on your actual intended outcomes.

[00:07:59] Sustainability is not going to help you achieve whatever goals you’re trying to achieve by

[00:08:03] working out in the first place.

[00:08:05] So focus on creating those sustainable reinforcement loops.

[00:08:10] Social accountability is a good example of this.

[00:08:13] It is a sustainable reinforcement loop.

[00:08:16] We can talk more about well-researched sustainable reinforcement loops in future episodes of

[00:08:21] the show, but the important thing here is to reduce the friction and find a way to sustainably,

[00:08:29] reinforce the actions that you care about taking.
