[00:01:33] I am getting on a plane in two days to go
[00:01:35] and give a keynote in another country,
[00:01:37] and Mark, you have an internal talk tomorrow.
[00:01:39] That’s right.
[00:01:40] We are both actively steeped
[00:01:42] in preparation for technical speaking,
[00:01:45] so it would be useful for us to
[00:01:46] learn how to give a technical talk.
[00:01:48] When was your first technical talk?
[00:01:51] Well, my first technical talk was
[00:01:54] probably on my PhD thesis,
[00:01:56] but I did give lectures as
[00:01:58] a teaching assistant in grad school,
[00:02:00] so kind of started there.
[00:02:02] That was very subtle the way you let us know that you
[00:02:04] have a PhD with just one prompt.
[00:02:06] I just said grad school. I didn’t say PhD.
[00:02:09] You literally said when I was
[00:02:10] prepping for my PhD thesis.
[00:02:11] Oh, okay. I guess I did.
[00:02:12] It just comes out all the time.
[00:02:15] It just comes out.
[00:02:16] Yeah. Speaking of that,
[00:02:18] haven’t I told you multiple times,
[00:02:20] I’m Dr. Racinovich.
[00:02:21] Dr. Racinovich. I apologize,
[00:02:23] doctor. I appreciate your service.
[00:02:26] That was your first talk.
[00:02:28] Like when did you get up in front of people?
[00:02:30] Like I did the high school musicals,
[00:02:32] like literally high school plays.
[00:02:34] That was always the bit player.
[00:02:37] Yeah. Lobster number two.
[00:02:39] Townsperson number three.
[00:02:40] Yeah. The second lobster.
[00:02:44] I did a talk at the software association of Oregon,
[00:02:48] somewhere in the mid-80s,
[00:02:50] like when XML was coming out on this new exciting technology,
[00:02:54] that was going to new markup language
[00:02:56] that was going to change everything.
[00:02:57] That was like a room of 30. That was cool.
[00:03:00] But I did a bunch of brown bags.
[00:03:02] Like if you can present to 10 people eating lunch,
[00:03:04] you can talk to 1,000 people at a conference.
[00:03:07] Yeah. I started doing
[00:03:10] technical teaching outside of school environments in the mid-90s.
[00:03:17] I remember one of my early talks was giving a talk on
[00:03:20] Regmon to the local Windows user group in Nashville, New Hampshire.
[00:03:25] That’s awesome.
[00:03:26] But then I started teaching Windows internals as
[00:03:28] part of a consulting company I joined called Open Systems Resources.
[00:03:31] That’s really what got me off the ground on teaching,
[00:03:36] and those were teach for a full day,
[00:03:38] and some of the courses were actually multi-day.
[00:03:41] Yeah. I worked at a company called Step Technology,
[00:03:44] and I worked in the education department,
[00:03:45] and they would fly us to like fly to Intel and stay in
[00:03:48] a Marriott for a week and go and do nine to five,
[00:03:52] teach classic ASP,
[00:03:54] teach HTTP 1.0, like that kind of stuff.
[00:03:57] It was like with labs and you’re your own proctor,
[00:04:00] you write the labs, you do the whole thing.
[00:04:02] We sit in a room with desktops,
[00:04:04] because there weren’t any laptops at that point.
[00:04:06] People weren’t dragging laptops around.
[00:04:08] Set up big CRTs and just like,
[00:04:10] all right everyone, everyone gets a Dell.
[00:04:12] Let’s all learn how to make a web page,
[00:04:14] and it takes 40 hours to do Hello World in Netscape Navigator.
[00:04:18] I liked the long form teaching because you could vary the pace,
[00:04:24] and it wasn’t like here you’ve got 45 minutes,
[00:04:27] and you’ve got all this content to get through,
[00:04:28] and you better nail it.
[00:04:30] Are you prepping for your talk tomorrow?
[00:04:32] Are you just going to just roll in and go like,
[00:04:33] what are we doing today?
[00:04:34] I’ve probably given at this point
[00:04:36] thousands of technical talks in my career.
[00:04:40] I counted the number of conferences that I’ve been to,
[00:04:43] I’ve been to every single TechEd, Ignite,
[00:04:47] TechReady, our internal conferences every year,
[00:04:49] and they used to be twice a year,
[00:04:51] Builds, slash PDCs, IT forums,
[00:04:55] third party conferences, and then internal talks.
[00:04:58] So I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t prep much for them.
[00:05:03] But hang on though, yes,
[00:05:05] but when you and me and Jan are doing work, you prep.
[00:05:10] You’ll say, that was a fun off the cuff talk.
[00:05:13] Let’s do a prepared version of that at Build,
[00:05:15] and we’ll spend 10 hours, 15 hours,
[00:05:17] really tightening those demos up.
[00:05:18] Doing one with you.
[00:05:21] Am I raising your game?
[00:05:23] No, you’re not raising my game.
[00:05:25] It just requires prep to do it with somebody else.
[00:05:28] Okay, so you’re saying you’re confident
[00:05:30] to just get off the plane and boot up your laptop
[00:05:32] and go, what are we doing?
[00:05:32] I mean, I could.
[00:05:33] So here’s one of the things that I do,
[00:05:35] is I look, so.

[00:05:41] Like for tomorrow.
[00:05:43] And the other thing too, is that like you,
[00:05:46] a lot of the content that I present
[00:05:49] is derived from content that I’ve already presented.
[00:05:51] Right.
[00:05:52] It’s incremental changes.
[00:05:53] It’s the thing that’s new.
[00:05:54] It’s a different angle on it.
[00:05:56] And so I’m already deeply familiar with most of it.
[00:06:00] And it’s just like, let me get familiar
[00:06:02] with the parts that are updated.
[00:06:03] And so like the talk I’m giving tomorrow,
[00:06:06] it’s on confidential computing and where it’s going
[00:06:09] and what we’re doing inside of Microsoft
[00:06:11] to Microsoft research.
[00:06:13] So it’s kind of a, and they’ve got to invite
[00:06:15] outside talk series.
[00:06:16] And so I’m going in there and giving this talk.
[00:06:18] It’s gonna be an hour.
[00:06:19] And you already know what you’re doing
[00:06:20] because you’re helping drive it.
[00:06:21] And it’s a status report as much as anything.
[00:06:24] I’m just trying to give people a sense
[00:06:25] of what prep time looks like to come off
[00:06:27] as a professional and look good.
[00:06:29] I’m looking at my calendar here
[00:06:31] and I have six technical presentations this week.
[00:06:35] I did a workshop on Tuesday.
[00:06:37] I’m doing a career thing on tomorrow at 10.
[00:06:40] And then I’m doing a workshop
[00:06:42] with Black Men in Tech on Thursday night.
[00:06:45] The workshop will have worksheets and things to fill out.
[00:06:47] So I’ll prep for a couple of hours for that.
[00:06:50] The career speakers event, I’ll prep for 10 minutes.
[00:06:53] But then this morning I presented on AI to our team
[00:06:55] and I prepped for a couple, two hours.
[00:06:58] You know, it just kind of depends
[00:06:59] on how well you know your material
[00:07:00] and then whether I needed to go and prep or reset
[00:07:03] or get hard head reset my demos.
[00:07:07] But then next week, like Friday,
[00:07:09] I’m getting on a flight to Johannesburg
[00:07:11] and I’ll be presenting at the AI tour.
[00:07:12] 45 minutes in front of 5,000 people.
[00:07:15] I want it to work.
[00:07:16] And I’ve got demos.
[00:07:18] I’ve got backup machines.
[00:07:19] I’m actually still using your open AI account
[00:07:21] at the CTO’s office.
[00:07:23] All right, yeah.
[00:07:24] I’m not letting anything run.
[00:07:25] It’s just,
[00:07:28] so like it matters more.
[00:07:30] Like, it’s not like I want to say
[00:07:31] the other ones matter less.
[00:07:32] But like the, if a mistake happens on stage,
[00:07:35] I’m gonna feel it.
[00:07:36] Yeah, I mean, that’s another way to look at it.
[00:07:38] What are the stakes for the talk?
[00:07:40] That kind of will influence.
[00:07:42] Like if you’re good, even like a 10 minute spot
[00:07:44] in a Satya keynote will take more prep time
[00:07:47] than, you know, because the stakes are high.
[00:07:50] Yeah.
[00:07:50] So it’d probably be announced before this thing comes out,
[00:07:55] but they’ve asked me to do a TED Talk
[00:07:57] at TEDx Portland.
[00:07:58] And you know, there’s a certain gravitas to that.
[00:08:01] And it’s only like a 15 minute talk
[00:08:02] or an 18 minute talk,
[00:08:04] but they’re getting me all in my brain about it.
[00:08:07] Like I’ve do 15 minute talks all the time,
[00:08:09] but this one you have a big TED standing behind you.
[00:08:11] You know what I mean?
[00:08:12] Yeah, with the little X.
[00:08:13] Yeah, with the X.
[00:08:14] The little X to tell you that you’re not the same.
[00:08:16] You’re not in the big leagues.
[00:08:18] The medium leagues.
[00:08:21] How would I get someone to prep for that?
[00:08:23] How do I get a beginner up to skill on that?
[00:08:25] Like when I teach beginners how to talk,
[00:08:27] I always tell them to start from the end.
[00:08:30] What’s the point of your thing?
[00:08:31] What do you want people to leave with
[00:08:33] and then build a narrative that leads them to, so what?
[00:08:37] What we’re talking about is prepping
[00:08:38] to give a talk that you’ve already got.
[00:08:39] But I think it goes hand in hand with developing the talk.
[00:08:42] And here’s the first thing you have to do.
[00:08:44] What is the person you’re speaking to?
[00:08:47] What do they know?
[00:08:48] What are they interested in?
[00:08:49] What problems do they have?
[00:08:51] Because if you don’t know who you’re speaking to,
[00:08:52] you’re not gonna know.
[00:08:54] Dude, that’s so true.
[00:08:55] That’s why this TED thing’s freaking me out.
[00:08:58] Yeah, because you don’t know who you’re talking to.
[00:08:59] It’s random people who like TED things.
[00:09:02] And they’re like people who paid a ticket
[00:09:03] to a nonprofit to go to a local event.
[00:09:05] And they’re all gonna sit in a concert hall
[00:09:08] and it’s just a bunch of random people.
[00:09:10] But I think at that point you go,
[00:09:11] okay, so selection of public,
[00:09:14] probably educated,
[00:09:15] because they’re showing up there
[00:09:16] and they’re interested in this.
[00:09:18] Probably somewhat aware of technology
[00:09:21] and what’s going on with AI.
[00:09:23] That’s the T in TED.
[00:09:24] But not experts,
[00:09:26] like you assume that they don’t know
[00:09:27] what a transformer model is,
[00:09:29] but they know what prompt and response and chat bots do.
[00:09:33] So you kind of start to build out a,
[00:09:35] here’s what the typical audience member,
[00:09:38] and maybe I’ll drop some things
[00:09:39] for the people that know a little more than that.
[00:09:42] And I’ll also try to carry along people
[00:09:44] that might know it a little less than that
[00:09:45] with a few things like,
[00:09:47] for those of you not familiar with X,
[00:09:50] here it is,
[00:09:50] to bring them up to the level of your target.
[00:09:53] I think that when I’ve gotten flummoxed
[00:09:55] going to give talks,
[00:09:56] it’s because I don’t really have a good mental model
[00:09:59] for who I’m talking to.
[00:10:01] That is very true.
[00:10:02] The nervousness that a beginner feels,
[00:10:05] there’s the basics of like,
[00:10:06] well, what if I say the wrong thing?
[00:10:08] And what if the thing blue screens or dies or whatever?
[00:10:10] But then it’s ultimately,
[00:10:12] are you confident in your topic?
[00:10:14] And are you confident that they’re interested
[00:10:15] in your topic?
[00:10:16] Because a lot of times,
[00:10:18] I have given a pep talk to a young person
[00:10:20] or an early in career speaker.
[00:10:22] And all I needed to say was,
[00:10:24] the people in that room want you to win.
[00:10:27] For this TED thing I’m all in my head about,
[00:10:29] I don’t know if these people want me to win
[00:10:30] or if they pay for the ticket to watch me fail.
[00:10:32] No, they want-
[00:10:33] That’s hilarious.
[00:10:34] I think it’s just implicit
[00:10:35] that people don’t like watching crash and burns.
[00:10:38] Most people.
[00:10:39] So if you assume that people went to build
[00:10:41] to go and see a cool education,
[00:10:43] then it’s like, well,
[00:10:44] am I confident in exciting them or educating them
[00:10:47] or empowering them or doing whatever?
[00:10:48] And then it’ll be okay.
[00:10:50] Yeah.
[00:10:50] I mean, what I do,
[00:10:51] and you probably do the same thing,
[00:10:52] is I’m like,
[00:10:53] I’ve got information here that they don’t have.
[00:10:56] Like otherwise, why am I speaking to them?
[00:10:58] Some point of view or knowledge
[00:11:00] that I want to share with them.
[00:11:01] And by the time you get up and give the talk,
[00:11:04] that’s not the right time to look at the person
[00:11:06] in the audience to go,
[00:11:07] I bet that person knows way more about this than I do.
[00:11:10] Even though it’s possible,
[00:11:12] you should not think that.
[00:11:13] You should think,
[00:11:14] I designed my talk for this person
[00:11:16] that knows less than this about
[00:11:17] and is interested in what I have to say about it.
[00:11:19] Yeah.
[00:11:20] And when I look at that face,
[00:11:21] that’s who that person is.
[00:11:24] Yeah, when you look at the audience,
[00:11:25] I always try to pick a happy, friendly face
[00:11:27] on one side of the audience
[00:11:28] and a happy, friendly face with it.
[00:11:30] And when you bounce back and forth between them,
[00:11:31] you do the same?
[00:11:32] Yeah, same thing.
[00:11:33] So you know how when people do like crowd work
[00:11:35] when they’re like a comedian or whatever,
[00:11:37] and they’ll tell a joke and they’ll go,
[00:11:38] this guy gets it.
[00:11:39] Yeah.
[00:11:40] What they’re doing is they’re like,
[00:11:41] he nodded, so I feel validated by that.
[00:11:43] So if you have a thousand people in a room or 15,
[00:11:46] a friend on each side that you can bounce back
[00:11:48] and forth is like,
[00:11:49] okay, keep doing what you’re doing.
[00:11:50] I’m picking up what you’re putting down.
[00:11:53] It’s funny that you do that too after all these years.
[00:11:54] You’re just like, yeah, I don’t know who you are,
[00:11:56] but I like your face
[00:11:56] because you make me feel validated.
[00:11:58] Well, I realized actually a while ago
[00:12:00] that I was unconsciously doing that.
[00:12:04] And it’s just kind of natural
[00:12:05] because when you’re like looking at the audience
[00:12:06] and somebody’s like nodding their head,
[00:12:09] you’re like, oh, that person likes what I’m saying.
[00:12:12] Let me talk to them.
[00:12:13] This talk is now for you, person in the front row.
[00:12:16] Yeah.
[00:12:17] I love it when people sit in the front row
[00:12:18] and are interested, you know?
[00:12:20] And then of course,
[00:12:21] there’s always the one in the front row doing email.
[00:12:23] And then it’s like…
[00:12:24] And then what I do is I try to talk to them
[00:12:26] and get loud.
[00:12:27] Yeah, so building a story arc,
[00:12:30] knowing who your audience is,
[00:12:32] that there’s some thing,
[00:12:33] like what do I want people to feel?
[00:12:35] One of the things that I’m guessing
[00:12:36] that you and I both do
[00:12:38] that I’ve always added to my technical talks is
[00:12:40] at the end of this,
[00:12:41] I want you to be able to pick up your laptop
[00:12:43] and say, I’m gonna implement that right now,
[00:12:46] or I’ll do a talk.
[00:12:47] And this is the thing that’s so great about Zoomit
[00:12:48] because we’re gonna do a show on Zoomit later,
[00:12:50] which is if you are not feeling good about your talk,
[00:12:53] just show a CIS internals tool.
[00:12:55] And then even if the topic didn’t matter,
[00:12:58] they’ll go, well, at least you used Zoomit
[00:13:00] or at least you used Regmon,
[00:13:01] or at least now I know about Process Explorer.
[00:13:04] And you know, well, everything that Hansman talked about
[00:13:06] for an hour was garbage,
[00:13:07] but I like that one tool.
[00:13:08] I’m gonna go and use that right now.
[00:13:11] Yeah, great tip.
[00:13:12] It’s a good tip.
[00:13:13] Just use one of your tools.
[00:13:16] But seriously though, sprinkling little things in there
[00:13:17] that like, okay, I knew some of that.

[00:13:23] but I didn’t know that tool
[00:13:24] or I didn’t know that other thing.

[00:13:26] So we’re talking about prepping as seasoned experts
[00:13:30] and having done this a million times.
[00:13:31] I think there’s a different prep for people that are new
[00:13:34] to it.
[00:13:35] Cause I think one, and actually even for me,
[00:13:37] like I look at the slides

[00:13:47] because I’ve been burned when I’ve not done that
[00:13:50] and not prepped enough of,
[00:13:53] I think the flow is a certain way.
[00:13:55] You know, it’s like the next slide is gonna be this.
[00:13:57] And so I start to lead into it
[00:13:58] and then I press click and it’s like, oh,
[00:14:01] actually I have something more to say
[00:14:02] about what I was just talking about or,
[00:14:04] oh, actually we’re gonna talk about something different
[00:14:06] than what I just said.
[00:14:07] We’re gonna come back to that thing later.
[00:14:10] And that just looks really amateur.
[00:14:11] Yeah.
[00:14:12] I always do a bullet point for every five minutes
[00:14:16] and I put them on a slide or a piece of paper.
[00:14:19] I used to put them on a piece of paper on the ground.
[00:14:21] So if I ever caught myself looking down at my feet,
[00:14:25] I’d have an eight and a half by 11 sheet of paper
[00:14:27] with like font that was like 25, 30 point font
[00:14:30] that’s like, don’t forget this, don’t forget that.
[00:14:33] And six bullet points could give me
[00:14:34] a half an hour of material.
[00:14:36] Yeah.
[00:14:36] That’s a great point.
[00:14:37] And I’ll come back to some of the tips that I got
[00:14:39] on how I keep track of what I’m doing.
[00:14:42] I mean, we did together actually,
[00:14:43] but one of the prep things that I actually do,
[00:14:46] I saw this talk by a woman that was really a promoter
[00:14:50] of the make it till you fake it.
[00:14:51] Fake it till you make it.
[00:14:53] Yeah.
[00:14:54] Yeah.
[00:14:55] Which is this power pose.
[00:14:58] Yeah.
[00:14:59] Oh, like.
[00:14:59] Which is, hands in the, like before the talk,
[00:15:02] go back stage, hands in the air, spread out
[00:15:05] and then breathe deeply for a minute.
[00:15:08] And that gets you open.
[00:15:10] And you do that.
[00:15:11] Yeah.
[00:15:11] It actually has an effect on the brain.
[00:15:13] Yeah.
[00:15:15] It’s funny.
[00:15:16] I look at my blood sugar, of course,
[00:15:17] cause I need to make sure I don’t die on stage.
[00:15:19] But I also have started looking at my heart rate
[00:15:22] because when I’m about to come on stage,
[00:15:23] my heart rate will be like 105 or 110,
[00:15:25] like I’m working out.
[00:15:27] And I will take that heart rate number
[00:15:28] and it’ll take me a moment to remember like,
[00:15:31] okay, I am here, I am present.
[00:15:34] Why is my heart rate like this?
[00:15:37] Is it because I’m about to fail?
[00:15:38] No, it’s because my body is setting me up for success
[00:15:41] by sending as much blood as possible to my brains
[00:15:44] or I don’t screw this up.
[00:15:45] So like the flutter feel, the butterflies and stuff,
[00:15:47] the nerves, it’s fight or flight
[00:15:50] in order to be successful.
[00:15:51] It’s not fight or flight setting you up for failure.
[00:15:54] And that presence, that moment of like,
[00:15:55] oh, okay, my body is not betraying me.
[00:15:58] My body is setting me up for success,
[00:16:00] made a big difference in my talk.
[00:16:01] So do you do breathing?
[00:16:02] Yeah, I do the breathing.
[00:16:03] And what I do actually, I do this,
[00:16:05] I did this actually when we were on stage once,
[00:16:06] I look at my heart rate and I consciously look at it
[00:16:09] and I do a biofeedback and try to get it
[00:16:11] under 100 before I get on stage.
[00:16:14] That way I don’t come out breathless.
[00:16:15] And you do that by breathing?
[00:16:17] Yeah.
[00:16:18] I assume.
[00:16:19] Well, I breathe and I look at it
[00:16:20] and I just kind of will it down.
[00:16:23] And in doing that, I assume breathing
[00:16:25] is causing that to go down.
[00:16:27] I didn’t know this about you.
[00:16:28] This is such good information.
[00:16:30] I just thought you were a robot.
[00:16:31] I just thought you went out and just like killed it.
[00:16:33] No, no, no.
[00:16:34] Now, one of the things that I always do,
[00:16:36] like similar to your, you know,
[00:16:37] write the points down is I put the sections
[00:16:40] on a piece of paper and I do this typically
[00:16:42] not long before the talk.
[00:16:44] Like even for tomorrow, I’ll do this and I’ll say,
[00:16:47] here’s the sections that I got.
[00:16:49] If I just take the sections
[00:16:51] and I just estimate their relative size,
[00:16:54] in many cases, they’re about the same size of content.
[00:16:57] I’ve got 45 minutes, I’ve got five sections.
[00:17:00] That means with no adjustments,
[00:17:02] each section is 45 divided by five minutes long.
[00:17:06] And then I just put that in each section and go,
[00:17:09] oh, wait a minute, I’ve got a lot more content
[00:17:11] in this one, so I’m gonna take two from here
[00:17:14] and put them into there.
[00:17:16] And then- You know what that is?
[00:17:17] It’s like making a paragraph
[00:17:19] and you’re like, this paragraph has nine sentences
[00:17:21] and this paragraph has two sentences
[00:17:22] and you’re setting up stanzas.
[00:17:24] It’s actually a little different than what I’m talking
[00:17:25] about is that the content’s already there.
[00:17:27] What I’m talking about is in estimating
[00:17:30] how much time I’m gonna spend in each one,
[00:17:32] I do this way of adjusting minute by minute
[00:17:37] to try to figure out how much time I have
[00:17:40] for that section.
[00:17:41] And what this results in sometimes is I’m like,
[00:17:44] wait a minute, I’ve got way too much content
[00:17:46] to fit in the kinds of times that I’ve got here.
[00:17:49] So I need to start throwing some stuff out.
[00:17:52] But what that does is at the end of it,
[00:17:53] I’ve got section one that if I’m giving the talk
[00:17:57] and it’s at one o’clock, I’ll say section one,
[00:17:59] I’ve got from one to 105.
[00:18:00] And at 105, I should be moving on to section two
[00:18:03] and section two, I’ve got from 105 to 112.
[00:18:07] And that’s just an approximation.
[00:18:09] And then what I can do is glance at the clock
[00:18:11] every now and then and go,
[00:18:13] oh, I’m in the middle of this,
[00:18:14] but I should be wrapping it up soon.
[00:18:17] So I’m behind, I need to speed up a little to catch up.
[00:18:20] And that keeps me kind of adjusted.
[00:18:23] Oh, I don’t have one of those.
[00:18:25] I have a speaker clock app and I’m like,
[00:18:27] okay, I’m giving a talk.
[00:18:28] I need one of those.
[00:18:29] I’ll send it to you.
[00:18:30] And the idea is where am I when I’m in trouble?
[00:18:34] Like, okay, if I get to 10 minutes
[00:18:36] and I’m not halfway through, that’s a problem.
[00:18:39] So there’s the section thing,
[00:18:41] but then there’s the also,
[00:18:42] if I’ve made it to the apex of this thing
[00:18:44] and I haven’t got, ta-da, and I got 10 minutes left,
[00:18:47] that’s a problem.
[00:18:48] So you don’t do the section thing.
[00:18:49] You just do a halfway marker.
[00:18:50] Everything I do is three acts.
[00:18:52] Oh, I don’t do that.
[00:18:53] Okay, so you have 45 minutes,
[00:18:55] five minutes on the front, intro and BS,
[00:18:58] five minutes on the back.
[00:18:59] Now I have 35 minutes, okay?
[00:19:01] 35 divided by seven is five minutes.
[00:19:03] So I get seven five-minute sections
[00:19:05] plus intro and outro bumpers.
[00:19:07] So you do the same, that’s what I do.
[00:19:09] There we are the same then, okay.
[00:19:10] And then I have 10, 15 minute act,
[00:19:14] 10, 15 minute act and scene.
[00:19:17] We’re gonna do about the same thing.
[00:19:18] And then I write it down in a piece of paper

[00:21:29] I can do it a moment’s notice.

[00:22:38] So, do you know Billy Hollis?

[00:22:41] So, Billy Hollis, years ago,
[00:22:43] when I was just getting started,
[00:22:44] gave me this amazing tip
[00:22:46] that I really loved about physicality.
[00:22:48] And he would, Billy’s from Arkansas or something,
[00:22:50] and he has this fantastic,
[00:22:51] and he said, let me finish.
[00:22:52] Can I talk for a second?
[00:22:54] And he would be talking,
[00:22:55] and then he’d say, let me step out of the box.
[00:22:57] And he’d physically mind getting out of a box,
[00:23:00] and then he’d leave whatever concept he had over here,
[00:23:04] and then he’d talk about his other concept,
[00:23:06] and then he’d step back in the box.
[00:23:08] So, when I do talks on Azure networking
[00:23:10] or anything where it’s like a client-server,
[00:23:13] I’ll declare, this is the client side of the stage,
[00:23:16] and this is the server side of the stage,
[00:23:17] and I will be in that space.
[00:23:19] Oh, that’s pretty cool.
[00:23:20] And making motions,
[00:23:21] like, hey, now we’re talking to the server.
[00:23:23] Oh, I’m receiving your data.
[00:23:24] Like, those kind of things.
[00:23:25] It seems small, but it’s stagecraft, and it works.

[00:24:24] Given enough talks, it’s gonna happen a few times.
[00:24:26] So I think one of the things that I do now
[00:24:28] when I start a talk is I’m like, I’m gonna speak.
[00:24:30] I just try to program myself.
[00:24:32] I’m gonna speak slowly, clearly.
[00:24:35] I’m not gonna second guess words.
[00:24:37] I’m gonna just go with the words that I pick,
[00:24:38] even if they’re not the best words, they’re the words.
[00:24:41] I’m not gonna stumble over my words.
[00:24:44] I’m gonna speak confidently.
[00:24:45] I know this better than anybody in the room.
[00:24:48] And so this is just programming.
[00:24:50] And I find it very effective
[00:24:51] because what that stops me from doing is going,
[00:24:55] blah, blah, blah.
[00:24:55] And then a word and going,
[00:24:57] crap, that’s not the right word.
[00:24:58] Or what’s the best word to say next
[00:25:00] and getting stuck there?
[00:25:01] It’s just like, whatever.
[00:25:03] This is a good enough word.
[00:25:04] Just go.
[00:25:05] It doesn’t matter.
[00:25:06] The analogy that I always talk about is when you’re a kid
[00:25:09] and you’re running downhill,
[00:25:11] you’re just running for the joy of running.
[00:25:13] But then if you start looking down
[00:25:14] and thinking about your feet,
[00:25:15] that’s when you slip and you fall.
[00:25:18] So just try to keep your momentum
[00:25:19] and try to keep your forward motion
[00:25:20] and don’t think about your feet.
[00:25:22] Yeah, don’t think about,
[00:25:23] oh, I should have said something different.
[00:25:24] Oh, I just stumbled.
[00:25:25] Oh, that was bad.
[00:25:26] I said, ah, bunch of, like, no, just move forward.
[00:25:29] On the ah thing,
[00:25:31] I recently, well, maybe the last 10 years,
[00:25:33] started removing ums.
[00:25:35] They still exist, but they’re replaced with silence.
[00:25:39] Oh, yeah, silence is right.
[00:25:40] So there’s like three ums in that sentence just now to you.
[00:25:43] I use silence instead and no one notices.
[00:25:46] No, you don’t need to fill the silence
[00:25:48] because people are not gonna notice.
[00:25:49] They’re digesting the information.
[00:25:51] Yes.
[00:25:51] So it’s different than a conversation
[00:25:53] where you’re trying to hold,
[00:25:55] especially because the attention’s on you.
[00:25:56] It’s not like they’re waiting to respond.
[00:25:59] And so you need to say um to signal that,
[00:26:01] hey, I’ve got more to say.
[00:26:02] I just am figuring out the right words.
[00:26:05] Exactly.
[00:26:05] And then when you and I are speaking,
[00:26:07] if you ever do talks with two people,
[00:26:09] the improv style of yes and,
[00:26:11] rather than disagreeing completely with the person.
[00:26:14] You say, well, yes, I agree.
[00:26:15] That’s completely wrong.
[00:26:16] Yeah, exactly.
[00:26:17] And it takes, sucks the energy out of the room.
[00:26:21] I’m shutting you down because we need to wrap it up.
[00:26:23] Yeah, we’re wrapping it up
[00:26:24] because you’ve ruined everything.

[00:27:07] there are techniques to get better at public speaking.
[00:27:10] So it’s nice to know that you do power poses
[00:27:12] and you think about your breathing
[00:27:13] and you do fumble when you’re giving a presentation.
[00:27:16] Like you’re not superhuman.
[00:27:18] Folks that are watching
[00:27:19] or maybe assume that we just are born
[00:27:21] knowing how to do this,
[00:27:21] it is practice to get at this level.
